Dating in your league

Published on 28 August 2010

Somebody once told me that the key to landing a successful relationship is to aim for women either two "points" above or below oneself. Is there any truth to this “chain of hotness”?

This may come as a surprise, but there actually is. However, it’s not for the reasons you may think. Dating people in the same league helps in two senses. The first is that it puts both parties on a level playing field. No one has outright power, per say, because you both bring similar values to the table. Mutual power means a greater chance of mutual trust. This is because both people attract similar levels of attention from the opposite sex. No one is holding on to the relationship for dear life. And that means you’re both in the relationship for the right reasons.

Secondly, during the get-to-know-you phase, it’s been proven that people in similar realms of attractiveness achieve greater levels of confidence in conversation. Again, a level playing field means no one feels the need to talk up/down to the other person, leaving less need to lie, which in turn leads to a stronger foundation for a successful relationship.
